Clearing the Canon Pixma E04, E05, E14 or E15 Error Message

The Canon E04, E05, E14 and E15 error messages appear when a Canon Pixma inkjet printer is having trouble recognising one or more cartridges. Canon’s official text to describe the error is “The FINE Cartridge cannot be recognized” however these messages may also appear when using refilled or remanufactured Canon ink cartridges which do not carry canon ‘FINE’ branding as well. This does not however mean you must use a brand new Canon cartridge in your printer only that your printer is having trouble identifying the installed cartridge as compatible.

Your Canon printer uses a series of golden colour contacts on the front of the cartridge as the only point of contact with the cartridge. If these contacts are obscured by dirt, ink or natural oils from your hands this can cause this message to occur, it may even be that the contacts have become damaged (visibly or otherwise) while the cartridge was being handled.

a88328e3-7ec4-473e-88dc-a941b557533bWhatever the case I would recommend running though the basic troubleshooting below in an attempt to resolve the issue.

How do I clear this message?

Assuming that the contacts have not become damaged or dead electronically you can normally bypass this message by cleaning the contacts mentioned previously. I would recommend following the steps below:

  1. Remove the cartridge from the printer.
  2. Switch the printer off using buttons on the body of the printer. DO NOT turn it off at the plug.
  3. Double check the label of the cartridge to ensure the correct cartridge is being installed for your printer.
  4. Wipe down the contacts on the front of the cartridge using a piece of kitchen tissue or another not fibrous tissue. ca944b46-eb88-4e3b-868e-fd814095d103
  5. Press the power button of the printer to turn it back on.
  6. Reinstall the cartridge, ensuring the cartridge is returned to the correct black/colour section of the cradle.

With any luck the cartridge will now be recognised by your printer and you will be able to carry on printing. if however one of the E04, E05, E14 or E15 “The FINE Cartridge cannot be recognized” messages remain it is likely that the cartridge is damaged/defective. Sadly in this instance the only option that remains is to replace the cartridge, preferably one produced by another party or from another batch.

If you have experienced this issue with multiple cartridges it may be that the corresponding contacts inside the printer have become obscured or even damaged. Thankfully these contacts can be easily accessed by removing the cartridge from the printer and can also be cleaned using the same kind of tissue. These contacts can be pointed in some printers so take care not to leave behind pieces of tissue when cleaning.

What Canon printers/cartridges will this help with?

The E04, E05, E14 and E15 error messages are relevant for a hugh variety of Canon inkjet printers including those printers that are compatible with the Canon PG-37, CL-38, PG-40, CL-41, PG-50 and CL51 range of ink cartridges. These printers include the Canon Fax JX200, MultiPass 450, MultiPass MP150, MultiPass MP160, MultiPass MP170, Pixma iP1200, Pixma iP1300, Pixma iP1600, Pixma iP1700, Pixma iP1800, Pixma iP1900, Pixma iP2200, Pixma iP2400, Pixma iP2500, Pixma iP2600, Pixma MP140, Pixma MP150, Pixma MP160, Pixma MP170, Pixma MP180, Pixma MP190, Pixma MP210, Pixma MP220, Pixma MP450, Pixma MP460, Pixma MP470, Pixma MX300 and Pixma MX310. Which of these six possible cartridges your printer takes will depend entirely upon the model of your printer.

Along with the printer models mentioned above the cleaning of the contacts can help the PG-510, CL-511, PG-512 and CL-513 range of ink cartridges be accepted by a printer. The following printers are all compatible with these black and colour cartridges, the Canon Pixma iP2700, Pixma iP2702, Pixma MP230, Pixma MP240, Pixma MP250, Pixma MP252, Pixma MP260, Pixma MP270, Pixma MP272, Pixma MP280, Pixma MP282, Pixma MP330, Pixma MP480, Pixma MP490, Pixma MP492, Pixma MP495, Pixma MP499, Pixma MX320, Pixma MX330, Pixma MX340, Pixma MX350, Pixma MX410 and Pixma MX420.

You can even use the above advice to clear the E04, E05, E14 and E15 errors with the Canon Pixma MG2150, Pixma MG2250, Pixma MG3150, Pixma MG3155, Pixma MG3250, Pixma MG3550, Pixma MG4150, Pixma MG4250, Pixma MX375, Pixma MX395, Pixma MX435, Pixma MX455, Pixma MX515 and Pixma MX525. These printers take the relatively new Canon PG-540, Cl-541, PG-540XL and CL-541XL ink cartridges.

I hope this has resolved the issue you were experiencing. If however you have any further questions please let us know in the comments.

I've got the same problem as described above on my Pixma MP495. I've cleaned the contacts on the cartridge and followed the instructions plus pressing the reset button for about 15secs but still get the error message. What should I try next?

    1. RefreshCarts

If the contacts have been cleaned but the printer still cannot recognise the cartridge then it is likely the contacts have become damaged or electronically dead. I can only recommend replacing the cartridge. The holding down of the resume button will not clear this error and is instead related to low ink warnings.

got the problem on my canon pixma mp499. followed the instructions and still didnt wipe the error. i replaced the cartridges with 2 more from refresh and the same thing happens. Is it possible that my printer is the issue?

    1. RefreshCarts

If you are receiving the same error with multiple cartridges then it is likely the corresponding contacts inside the printer are at fault. I would recommend giving these contacts a good clean with some kitchen tissue and maybe even an alcohol based cleaning solution if you are feeling brave. You could always try with a new Canon cartridge if you want to eliminate the chance of just having been incredibly unlucky, but I would personally recommend just installing one of your old empty cartridges you know have worked previously.

My cartridge worked fine. After few weeks, the same cartridge gave the E05 error. I tried replacing with a new one, the error still appears !

Hi, I’ve been using Canon PIXMA MP250 for a few months now and it suddenly started showing error “E05″ and it stopped working. I’ve tried all the methods that you mentioned in other postes (reset button, clearing the cartridge etc) and it still doesnt work. Any ideas? Thanks in advance!

The canon MP270 should be considered as a crime against mankind. Bought new toner cartridges PG510+PG511 and error code is E14. I bought again 2 new cartriges PG512+PG513 and error code E14 still remaining. Reinstalled DRIVER for MP270 and error computing code says that Printer MP270 needs cartriges PG210+PG211. The HELL is that? Listen Canon, if within 12 hours you didn't answer my question : what the Hell is this? Believe, I won't never buy Canon anymore and as a professional photographer, I would change into NIKKON and will make my collegues do the same.

  7. Rich C

I had the E05 error with a refilled cartridge from Cartridge World – usually Resume sorts out 'empty cartridge' messages but this was something new. Tried once or twice but when I followed your instructions to the letter (i.e. switching off the machine!) it worked fine, after a bit of chuntering from the printer – as if to say "I've been told not to accept anything but new Canon cartridges"!… Thanks.

In my view, if all website owners and bloggers made just right content material as you did, the
web can be much more helpful than ever before.

Hallo,i have recieved a second hand canon mg-3150,without cartrige, which i bought one original color and one non original black, when i put both, give error 05,also the lamp of empty ink for both,if i use one of the ,it recognise it,and gives for the other one ,empty ink, whats the problem that it cannot recognize both the same time?

  12. Martin Kay

Used your suggested cleaning procedure and E05 changed to E04 and then to 1, ie ready to print. Thanks!

  13. Martin Kay

I replaced both cartridges in my Canon MG 3250 with genuine Canon fine 540XL cartridges and to begin with got an E05 error from the black cartridge. Eventually this was rectified by cleaning the contacts on the cartridge (the contacts on the printer were OK as they gave no error when the empty cartridge was replaced). Now, with no error message, the print is produced at a snails pace with only the coloured parts being printed – no black at all! What is happening is that the number indicator is flashing the successive elements of the figure 8 when it should show the number of prints left to print. can anyone help, before I bin it!

    1. RefreshCarts

Sounds like the printhead of the black ink cartridge is a little dried. I would recommend doing some cleaning/deep cleaning cycles prom your printer to hopefully pull through some ink. If this still does not help then it is possible to freshen up the printhead by sitting it on a small damp patch on some tissue for 30 seconds and then cleaning again.

  14. Ernst Ghermann

Canon MP-210 black cartridge will not print middle range of nozzles. Did all the suggested cleaning of nozzles and contacts with no help. How can I tell whether it is the nozzle electronics or the printer that's at fault? I hate to buy a new cartridge and find that that was not the problem.
